If you spend most of your day sitting — whether you’re working, studying, or just relaxing — your body takes the hit. Muscle stiffness, poor posture, back pain, and low energy are all common signs. The good news? Functional training can help reverse those effects by improving your mobility, posture, and overall well-being.
The Impact of Sedentary Habits and How to Combat Them with Functional Training
Sitting for long hours affects various regions of the body, including the hips, spine, shoulders, neck, and even the core—the central area responsible for stability and balance. A lack of movement also compromises blood circulation and may lead to reduced physical conditioning over time. This is where functional training exercises come in: movements adapted to your reality, focusing on strengthening the muscles involved in everyday tasks.
Functional training works the whole body. Unlike many traditional gym workouts, it prioritises functionality and motor coordination with exercises that mimic natural movement patterns. This includes squats, jumps, rotations, and pushing or pulling movements — all aimed at regaining strength, mobility, and stability.
Best Functional Exercises for People Who Sit All Day
Some of the most effective physical exercises to counter the effects of sitting include squats, planks, push-ups, and training with battle ropes or kettlebells. These movements activate multiple muscle groups simultaneously, improving posture, glute strength, spinal alignment, and heart rate — and increasing heart rate to help burn calories and boost your energy for the rest of the day.
Additionally, a functional training circuit is an excellent way to achieve results quickly. With varying intensities and full-body movements, it’s possible to improve balance and stability even with just a few minutes of training each day.
How to Start (and Maintain) a Functional Training Routine
If you’re unsure where to start, seeking help from a personal trainer can be a great decision. Professional support helps you select the best exercises tailored to your needs, respecting your limits and minimising the risk of injury. At FBW, for instance, we offer group workouts tailored to your level, always with technical guidance and plenty of motivation.
Motivation Is in the Details (and the Community Too)
Training regularly isn’t just about willpower — it’s also about the environment. Being surrounded by people with similar goals, feeling welcomed by a group, and sharing challenges and victories are potent ways to boost motivation and commitment.
At FBW, our functional training sessions take place in groups and outdoors, with a focus on well-being and real-life applications. There’s no pressure or comparison: just inspiring examples, helpful tips, and plenty of support. In our sessions in Ajuda, near Belém and Restelo, each class is a moment of focus, fun, and progress. And yes, we’re always sharing updates on our website and social media — because seeing our community in action can spark inspiration (and maybe a few likes, too).
Movement Is the Key
Spending too much time sitting is a reality for many, but it doesn’t have to mean pain or limitation. With well-chosen functional exercises done regularly and with intention, you can transform your body, strengthen your muscles, and recover your well-being.
You don’t have to be an athlete, super flexible, or live in the fitness world. You just need to start — with focus, motivation, and the proper support. Functional training is here to help you feel stronger, more energised, and more in tune with your body.
Curious? Check out our website or come along to a session. There’s always room for one more — and your body will thank you for it.
